Victoria University Sets Up Modern Student’s Cafeteria

Students of Victoria University will no longer leave campus premises in search for restaurants to get food, snacks and drinks during meal breaks. The management of the Jinja Road based University gifted them with a modern well equipped cafeteria.

The cafeteria (called Victoria Café), which was officially launched last weekend at a glamorous event, was one of the demands tabled by students as a way of improving their social life at campus. The cafeteria was, according to Guild President Keith Mugabi, one of the pledges they made during elections.

“The cafeteria is an idea that has been going around for a very long time. The promoter (Rajiv Ruparelia of Ruparelia Group) promised to do this for us and he has finally fulfilled his promise. Now it is upon us to enjoy our time at the University. The environment is friendly, for reading, eating and interacting.” Mugabi said in an interview at the opening of the Café.

In his speech, Mugabi said that many more good things are coming to improve the social welfare of Victoria University students. He didn’t elaborate any details. Victoria University students have been eating in restaurants in the neighborhood. The Cafeteria will act as the Guild Canteen.

Joseph Nyakaana, the acting Vice Chancellor, while launching the Cafeteria, said the Cafeteria has been offered to the University as a tool for students to live a good life while at campus. He thanked the guild cabinet for engaging students in all aspects of life. He also thanks students for embracing the cafeteria, University staff and chefs for ensuring that the University has a confortable learning environment.

Patricia Nassozi, a Human Resource Management student, noted the café will save them time they have spending outside campus looking for food. “The Café will help us to keep time. Instead of going to different cafeterias around town looking for food, we will come here and get something to eat and go back to class.” She explained.

 

Battle Of Wits At Victoria University Students Quiz Night

When a university student stands up to speak in public, that student is expected to exhibit and utter utmost intelligence. And last Friday, students of Victoria University were put to test at the student’s quiz night.

The fun filled event was a show of student’s brain strength by answering question covering a range of current affairs and general knowledge. The student’s quiz night according to Keith Mugabi, the Guild President of Victoria University, was an idea created by students.

“We wanted to make it a pleasant event that can help students wind up the week’s study load. We wanted to relax as we learn from each other.” one of the students who participated said when asked why they choose a quiz night.

Mugabi said the quiz was also organized to improve student’s learning standards and test their awareness about local and global issues. “We are university students therefore we should be knowledgeable.” The Guild explained.

Nigerian Singer Whizkid Set For StarTimes 6th Anniversary

Startimes has announced that the popular Nigerian music star Wizkid will be performing at a concert scheduled for 3rd December 2016 in Kampala at Lugogo cricket oval. StarTimes will also be celebrating their 6th anniversary in Uganda.

The concert will be in conjunction with Face Tv, their exclusive local music television channel property. This was revealed at a press conference held at Startimes head office in Kampala. Aldrine Nsubuga, the vice president marketing at Startimes revealed that Wizkid will be joined by a list of Ugandan popular artist as seen on Startimes channel – Face TV.

The payTv service provider will also give back to their customers a one week free to airtime from 17th to 30th of October 2016. During this period customers will be viewing their favorite Startimes channel at no cost as they capitalize on local content marketing.

Startimes has injected Ushs1.5 billion to make sure this landmark celebration is a success and aimed at promoting local talent while focusing on the youth as an important part of their audience.

Mr Nsubuga also encouraged the public to support the event saying “we want to urge the public to join Startimes in celebrating our success and come party with our top local artist come December.

Jenneth Prischa Ready For Gulu Music Concert

Gulu is preparing for the first sole female music concert dubbed the best of Jenneth Prischa on 9 September, 2016. Jenneth Prischa is a recording artist who has been at the forefront of major musical events in the northern region. Prischa is a house hold name and a darling to many youth and women who cherish some of her gender sensitive songs aimed at rebuilding shuttered families and souls across northern Uganda.

Her diversity in song writing and singing as exhibited in some of her songs with mixed genres ranging from hiphop, dancehall, afro, Zouk and gospel music makes her on top of her game regionally. With over 20 songs to her name Prichas’s is geared towards the path to stardom. 

The self-styled female artist based in northern Uganda rose to fame in 2012 during a song competition by save the children international. Her song on the negative impact of domestic violence scoped her award and cash prizes that instigated her to record more hits thus her rise as the best northern female artist for the year 2013 and 2015 respectively. Prischa is passionate about family relation, community and love life as manifested in most of her songs.

MTN Partners With Beneath The Lies TV Show

Uganda’s leading telecom services provider MTN Uganda has today in a press statement announced a partnership with 40 Plus, the producers of the popular television drama series, Beneath the Lies (BTL) which will premiere on July 31st, 2016 in Kampala. Under this partnership, MTN will be the exclusive Digital Partner for the show and social media followers of both Beneath the Lies and MTN can find information relating to the show on MTN’s social media channels. 

Furthermore, fans of the show will be able to interact with the show cast in a Face-live session on the MTN Facebook page supported by the twitter page on Saturday, 30th July and will also watch full episodes of the show on MTN’s YouTube channel for a limited time after August 31st 2016. 

Beneath The Lies is a Ugandan TV drama series that explores the dark side of the City filled with extortion, drug trafficking, the exploitation of women and child prostitution. It depicts the challenges of growing up in urban Kampala, and utilizes local talent to tell the story of the extreme lengths both the rich and the poor are willing to go in order to survive. 

Speaking at the official announcement of this partnership, one of the Executive Producers Cedric Babu Ndilima said; "The digital partnership with MTN presents an opportunity for Beneath the Lies to air this Ugandan production not just in Uganda but throughout the world. MTN arguably has the largest social media brand following in Uganda but more importantly is in tandem with what we the producers are trying to achieve.” 

Nana Kagga Macpherson the scriptwriter executive producer, of  the show added, “BTL is made in Uganda by Ugandans for the World and MTN is the company that will help us to create the movement and traction to achieve our goals. The show is set to revolutionize the TV industry in Uganda and we are delighted to have the opportunity to do this through strategic partnerships like this with MTN."

Total Takes Over African Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Total reached an agreement Thursday under which the Group will become the official sponsor of African football for the next eight years.

Total will support CAF’s ten principal competitions, starting with the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which has a global audience. Renamed the Total Africa Cup of Nations, the tournament will be held in Gabon from January 14th to February 5th, 2017.

“This partnership is a major milestone in our ongoing search for additional resources to accelerate African football’s development, bring its governance up to date, upgrade its sports infrastructure and advance its performance globally,” commented Issa Hayatou, President of the Confederation of African Football.

South African Singing Group MiCasa Praises Sheraton Kampala Hotel

On Sunday afternoon the celebrated music group, MiCasa jetted into Uganda for their major act in Kampala at the recently concluded Blankets and Wines 13th Edition. The group that is well known for their hit songs “Tulale FoFoFo” and “Jika” checked into their rooms at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Sunday night after their electric performance. 

While speaking to J’Something the lead singer of the group he remarked that he loved the weather in Uganda, the love from their fans, the beautiful ladies and enjoyed their stay at Sheraton Hotel. They loved the local food, amazing scenery of the city from the top of Sheraton Hotel. 

“We are very grateful to be in Uganda and we love the awesome treatment we have received from Sheraton Kampala Hotel and not forgetting the organizers of Blankets and Wines. We loved the energy and love our fans showed us. It was humbling and exciting to watch the crowd dance and sing along our songs. There is no better moment for any artist than seeing fans enjoying your music.” He commented. 

The house music band is made up of three adorable guys; J’Something, Mo-T and Dr. Duda who bring together different vibes to produce amazing music. The group has won several awards and most recently Best Dance album, Group of the year and Record of the year in the South African Music Awards among many others.

Kampala Parents School sports complex was Wednesday very busy with sports activities as four schools battled for supremacy in ball games like basketball, netball and football.

Kampala Parents School as part of their agenda to nurture talent invited St. Kisule Primary School, Muto Primary School Buwama and St Catherine Primary School to partake in the Inter-schools football, netball and basketball competitions.

At the end of the day, Muto Primary School had beaten Kampala Parents School 4-3 on penalties in the football semifinals to set up a meet in the final with St Kisule Primary School who earlier had defeated St Catherine. Muto went on to claim the title with a 2-0 win over St Kisuule.

Muto also emerged overall winners in netball after garnering two wins. Kampala Parents School won one netball game while Kisuule and St Catherine won none. The hosts also retained the basketball bragging rights when the visiting schools failed to field basketball teams.

Daphne Kato, Principal Kampala Parents School, describing the visiting pupils as ‘brothers and sisters’ said they are ‘all colleagues in the struggle’. “We need to strengthen our relationship with other schools, we are all brothers and sisters. Teams like Muto Primary School have come from upcountry and have been able to interact with us. They defeated us and this builds their confidence.”

Margaret Okwi, Kampala Parents School head of co-curriculum activities, said pupils get very many benefits from co-curriculum activities. She said pupils get to socialize, make friends and learn to live with other people.

“Sports activities help pupils build their bodies, become physically fit and body endurance. It relaxes their minds after spending a lot of time in classrooms. At Kampala Parents School, we try to build a child as a whole – physically and mentally.”

Kibuuka Mugaga, games master and coach football team at Muto Primary School, was excited that his upcountry school could come to Kampala and win trophies.

“We are very happy to be the winners today. First of all we work together as a school. Secondly as games teacher, I love what I do. My players believe in themselves and what they are capable of.” He said.

Gerald Kawoya, a primary seven pupil at Muto, equally felt good especially after his exploits on the field of play.  “I feel good that we came here and emerged as winners. We train very hard and our teacher help us a lot. We train three times a week.” He said. He took home a pair of bed sheets and a towel.

MTN Rewards Outstanding Callertunez

Rema emerged the overall winner in the MTN Callertunez Awards 2015 with 350,487 downloads. The awards were launched last year in July to reward artistes whose music is consumed most by listeners in form of MTN Callertunez. 

The Awards included monthly recognition of artistes with the most downloaded CallerTunez every month and customers with the most CallerTunez downloads. The artiste with most downloads received Ugx 2.5m and customers who downloaded the most CallerTunez received awesome prizes from Huawei and MTN Mobile Money worth Ugx 100,000 to other eleven customers. 

Rema’s single Mchuzi was one of the most popular CallerTunez amongst customers from the time the awards were launched and she won most of the monthly CallerTunez prizes.

MTN CallerTunez Factsheet; 

MTN CallerTunez is a service which allows an MTN mobile customer to personalize the conventional ring-back tone that the calling party will hear while waiting for the called party to accept the call. 

MTN has made it possible for the subscriber to personalize this tone with interesting content including music, personal recordings and other audio content of the customers’ choice. Types of CallerTunez include music, comedy skits and other sound bites.  

MTN launched the MTN CallerTunez service in April 2010 which is currently subscribed by over 1,400,000 customers.

KISU Rewards Top Sports Achieving Students

Students of Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) who excelled during International Schools Sports Association of Kampala sports season were Friday decorated for representing the school well. Students who performed well this season in football, volleyball, athletics, swimming and basketball received their medals at the school’s sports awards gala, at the school premises in Bukoto, Kampala.

Steve Lang, the KISU Director reiterated that the school is “committed to ensuring that our students participate in different activities and develop their talent. “It has been a good year in which we have been laying a foundation for KISU to dominate in the coming years.

We however know this will take a while, we cannot achieve this sports dominance quickly but we have to work for it. We are committed to ensuring that our students participate in different activities and develop their talent.” Raquel Therbege, the Sports Director at KISU said the season that just ended was a wonderful sports year for the school because students performed exceptionally.

One of football coach at KISU, Bob Buga, said the boys were dedicated and showed valuable skills. They worked hard and were driven by a lot of adrenaline. Competition has gone up but we achieved our objectives we set out in the beginning. We wanted reach more finals, even if we didn’t most of them, but we made it. We played in very finals.  We want to build on this year’s success to win more titles next season.”
